After the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between SPLM and Government of the Sudan, South Sudan has become autonomous and following this a gap created in the banking industry as the then banks most of which were Islamic banks left the country. Thus as part of filling the gap created for conventional banking services, CBE had decided to open a subsidiary bank in Juba and established by the name “Commercial Bank of Ethiopia South Sudan Limited” in 2009 and had been operating with four branches (now only one branch is operational). Commercial Bank of Ethiopia South Sudan Limited, CBESSL, is a 100% owned Subsidiary of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia incorporated as per the laws of South Sudan. The group company offers a wide range of financial products and Services including deposit, credit, trade service, internet and card banking and works with major banks globally in correspondent banking relationships. The group has long heritage in providing financial services since its establishment 75 years ago when it was incorporated in Ethiopia. The South Sudan operation was established in 2009 and has more than 9 years of service in the market.
